Understanding Menopause

Symptoms and Health Issues

Menopause is a natural biological process that marks the end of a woman’s reproductive years, typically occurring between the ages of 45 and 55. It is diagnosed after 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period. While menopause is not a disease, it brings significant hormonal changes that can impact a woman’s physical and emotional health.

Common Symptoms of Menopause

The symptoms of menopause vary from woman to woman, but some of the most common include:

  • Hot flushes – Sudden feelings of warmth, often accompanied by sweating and flushing.
  • Night sweats – Intense sweating during sleep, often disrupting rest.
  • Mood swings – Irritability, anxiety, and even depression due to hormonal fluctuations.
  • Sleep disturbances – Difficulty falling or staying asleep.
  • Weight gain – Metabolic changes may contribute to increased body fat, particularly around the abdomen.

Associated Health Issues

Menopause can also increase the risk of several health conditions, including:

  • Osteoporosis – Declining estrogen levels can lead to bone loss, increasing the risk of fractures.
  • Cardiovascular disease – Estrogen helps protect the heart, so its decline raises the risk of heart disease.
  • Cognitive decline – Some women experience memory issues or an increased risk of dementia..
  • Urinary incontinence – Weakening of pelvic muscles can lead to bladder control problems.
