Darkness into Light

Darkness Into Light began in 2009 in Dublin’s Phoenix Park, where approximately 400 people took part in the very first walk. What started as a small community event quickly grew into a national and international movement. The initiative was created to support Pieta’s life-saving work in suicide and self-harm prevention.

Founded in 2006 by Joan Freeman, Pieta was established to provide free, accessible support for people experiencing suicidal thoughts, self-harm, or bereavement caused by suicide. Over the years, Darkness Into Light has expanded dramatically, with hundreds of walks now taking place across Ireland and internationally. Millions of euros have been raised to help fund counselling, therapy, crisis intervention, and support services for individuals and families in need. The walk’s symbolism is deeply important. Participants begin their journey in darkness and finish as the sun rises — representing hope, healing, and the possibility of brighter days ahead.

The Purpose Behind the Event

Mental health challenges affect people of every age, background, and community. Darkness Into Light creates a safe and supportive environment where people can come together, remember loved ones, support friends and family, and stand united in hope. The event also helps reduce stigma around mental health by encouraging honest conversations and reminding people that seeking help is a sign of strength and what began as a single walk in Ireland has now become an international event involving communities around the world. Thousands of people now participate across multiple countries each year, united by the shared belief that hope, connection, and support can save lives. Luton Town Walkiing Football Club Ladies involvement began in 2025 when three of our players, two of them Walking Football Irish internationals walked the Luton organised event. While in May 2026 even more Luton Town WFC Ladies players and family members walked the same event.

The core purpose of Darkness Into Light is to:

  • Raise awareness about suicide prevention and mental health
  • Support people affected by suicide and self-harm
  • Fund free mental health and crisis support services
  • Encourage communities to talk openly about mental wellbeing
  • Show solidarity with individuals and families facing emotional struggles

Why Darkness Into Light Matters

Every year, thousands of people participate for deeply personal reasons. Some walk in memory of loved ones lost to suicide. Others walk in support of friends or family members who are struggling. Many participate to show that mental health matters and that support should always be available. The funds raised through Darkness Into Light help ensure that vital support services remain accessible to those who need them most. By taking part, communities send a powerful message: No one should have to face darkness alone.
