Competitive Fixtures &Tournaments
As well as our regular weekly training sessions, we also play competitive games in tournaments and leagues including occasional friendlies. We try and provide these competitive playing opportunities to as many players as possible based on:
- ABILITY
- AVAILABILITY
- CLUB MEMBERSHIP
Ability comes first because we want to pick the best players to represent the club with valid membership status, although valid membership will not guarantee selection, it will exclude those who don’t have it. These leagues and tournaments, having been originally created to serve the needs of mature adults with diverse playing abilities; those that have and can play, those who never have or can't. These leagues are normally set in age range categories regardless of ability. Because the sport was originally created for adults who were less prone to exercise, a lot older, recovering from illness or maybe wanted to experience a team sport but with out the physical contact associated with standard football these categories for women were set at:
- 40 YEARS AND OVER
- 50 YEARS AND OVER
- 60 YEARS AND OVER
- 65 YEARS AND OVER
- 70 YEARS ETC
Our Teams
We currently field teams in the first 2 categories 40 years and 50 years. We provide the team strip, you provide your own boots (not trainers) as we only play on artificial surfaces and, although the game is 'non-contact,' you are quired to wear your own shin pads. Team selection and schedule of matches is managed by an app called Teamstats. If you've been asked if you want to play competitively then you'll added to the app and an invite sent.
Unfortunate, In recent years, there’s been a tendency to drop this age range to 30/35. In our opinion this is counter to why walking football was created in the first place:
to provide a safer, no contact short game version of football designed to encourage older less mobile, physically restricted adults.
We have no problems with welcoming under 40s at our training sessions but do not support the need to serve these age groups with competitive football.
Since We Were Formed in 2023
LTWFC Ladies compete in several tournaments and regular league fixtures. Unfortunately, as of mid 2026 we are one of the only ladies walking football clubs in the Bedfordshire area that manage regular competitive teams, so all our games are played in county leagues elsewhere. To date we play or have played in:
- HWWFL the Herts Womens Walking Football League at Cheshunt FC
- TVWFL the Thames Valley Walking Football League at Bisham Abbey
- The FA Walking Football Cup
- The WFA National Cup
- The Beds FA Walking Football Festival
- The MIDDX FA Walking Football Festival
Of course you can join Luton Town WFC Ladies without ever playing a competitive game, it might not be your thing, so you could choose to just come along to our training and off the field well-being and social sessions, but if you do have competitive aspirations then either our manager and coaches will speak to you about your silky on the ball skills or you can approach them and ask about the possibility or playing competitively.
The Laws Of The Game (or rules if you prefer)
Another aspect of competitive tournament football are the ‘rules’ or as they’re correctly known ‘The Laws of the Game.’ LOTG. Before the FA came into being in the 19th Century, football existed as a multitude of game play styles, with their own unique rules or game laws:
- The Cambridge Rules 1848
- The Rugby School Rules 1845
- The Sheffield Rules 1858
- Eton Field Rules 1847
Although things aren't quite as bad, we do have as of 2026 the following:
- FA Rules of the Game
- Limited Touches FA Variant
- WFA Rules of the Game
- Scottish WF Version
- EUFA 5 Touch Rules
- European No Goalkeeper Variant
Luton Town WFC Ladies play FA and WFA rules including the limited touches variant. However, there are minor differences that can lead to confusion including the 'mistakes' that can sometimes occur by referees who adjudicate under both sets of laws, mixing things up - they're only human after all.
